Nintendo’s Marketing seems strange sometimes… most Nintendo Directs in the past have had announcements ahead of their release, even if they didn’t have all that much new info. And now a few days ago they drop a “Mini” Direct out of pretty much nowhere (from what I have seen there have only been some rumours, nothing definitive, ahead of time) with some decent content and a few surprises, in my opinion.
Let’s first go through updates for announced or already released titles:
- Pokken Tournament DX gets several new characters in 2 DLC “Waves”
- New Abilities in Kirby Star Allies are shown
- Super Mario Odyssey gets Balloon World with a free update
- Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle adds Donkey Kong as a DLC character
- Payday 2 gets a new character and local play with CRIME.NET
Some neat new stuff there, but the real meat is up next.
This to me was the much more interesting part, as this Direct revealed multiple new titles coming to the system, which by itself I would have expected should have given this Direct enough weight to be a “regular” one.
First in the list is The World Ends with You, a title originally released on the Nintendo DS. At the time it was a title I greatly enjoyed and hoped that it gets a sequel for quite a long time, so I am looking forward to this very much. Doesn’t hurt that this “Final Remix” release will be getting additional story content as well. Fingers crossed that sales are high enough for Square to finally consider a sequel.
Hyrule Warriors is getting its third version, an “Ultimate” one, on the Switch, not a bad choice given this is a great adaptation of the Dynasty Warriors concept in a Nintendo license. Sports fans also get some new fodder with Mario Tennis Ace, not my cup of tea, but I’m sure a lot of people will have fun with it.
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA also gets a Switch release, now that the initial problems with the localised version are almost over (first translation was… not great, to say the least). Besides Ys, NIS is also publishing a new title by SNK on the Switch in the west: SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy, a fighting game with an all-female roster.
2 Indie titles are also in the list of announcements, namely Fe and CELESTE.
The last titles in the list aren’t anything to sneeze at either, with Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (with added playable Funky Kong) and Dark Souls: Remastered book-ending this “Mini” Direct.
