Games I played in 2016 – Looking Back

Note: List probably incomplete as I have not kept close track of all the games I played over the year. There is no particular order to the list

Final Fantasy 15

Completed the main story, took around 55 hours (took some time in sidequests and the like, can be done faster). Mostly liked it, some things could (and probably will) be improved in the later parts, but overall it was really good, one of the best games of the year for me. Will continue to play once the DLCs / story updates get released.

Grim Dawn

Completed the main storyline, played it for around 50 hours. Very good hack-n-slash, could use a bit of improvement / more variety on the loot in the later third of the campaign though. Will continue to play once DLCs get released.

No Man’s Sky

Played it for several hours, was not as disappointed as many others, but it is definitely not worth full price. I’ll keep watching what they radd through updates / DLC, but not very likely that I’ll pick it up again unless they change a lot.

RPG Tycoon

Played it for a bit while it was still in Early Access, neat little rpg town sim, may revisit it at some point in the future to see what has changed.

Titan Quest: Anniversary Edition

Very nice update of the original game, with a long list of fixes and support of higher resolutions. Still a great hack-n-slash, definitely recommendable.

Bernd das Brot und die Unmöglichen

Played through the story, neat German point and click adventure based on a German TV-series, featuring a depressed bread with too short arms, a talking bush and a sheep…. to give you a small idea of how weird it is.

Broken Sword: Director’s Cut

Finally played through this, nice point and click adventure game with a bit of new content from the Director’s Cut.

Broken Sword 2: Remastered

Played through the story, good sequel. The Remastered edition apparently improved the quality of the artwork and audio noticeably, among other things.

Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness

With the release of the PC port, I played through the main story of this game again (must be the fourth or fifth time now since my first experience with the game on the DS). Takes a bit of getting used to if you know the later games, but it’s still good and they fixed the problems the port had at release.

Disgaea 2 Dark Hero Days (PSP)

After playing the PC port of the first game, I revisited the PSP version of the sequel (played it on the PS Vita). Played through the main story and a bit of the Axel story (stopped at that point as the PC port was announced which I will be playing as well). Improves on several things compared to the first game.

Disgaea 3 (PS3 and Vita versions)

Played through the main story of the PS3 version and parts of the story on the PS Vita version. Seems to be the least liked by most folks I know in terms of the story and characters, I still like it. Mechanics-wise there are quite a few changes/improvements compared to the second game.

Disgaea 4 (PS3 version)

Played through the main story of the PS3 version. For a long time, I considered this the best game of the series, until 5 got released. It improves on the third game, though it does not change quite as much as the third did from the second.

Disgaea D2

Played through the main story. Sadly (for me) in quite a few areas a step back from 4, too many changes that did not fully work out and some of the map balancing was really bad

Tales of Xillia 2

Played through the story. Nice sequel, though it does reuse a lot from the first game, the story stands on its own mostly / explores the world some more. Some of the design decisions (silent protag, dialog choices) took some getting used to.

Tales of Zestiria

Played through the story. Liked the new combat system, enjoyed the story and the characters, another good entry to the series, looking forward to the “kind of” prequel Berseria.

Monster World IV

Played some hours. Decent Wonder Boy title, but the ice world made me quit the game, don’t know if I’ll return to it.

Age of Empires 2 HD

Played the tutorial campaign. Decent HD remake, only goes up to HD resolution though.

Mad Games Tycoon

Played several hours of this during Early Access. Nice game dev simulator with more customizability and options than Game Dev Tycoon.

Neptunia ReBirth 1

Played several hours so far. Fun JRPG with a very tongue-in-cheek setting and dialogues.

Nier

Played a few hours so far. Interesting action rpg with a mixture of design elements

Divinity Original Sin Enhanced Edition

Played a few hours so far. Nice kickstarted rpg with an interesting start to the story.
